Ratings checked on September 30, 2026. The Google and Trustpilot columns show the rating followed by the number of reviews; EA = Enrolled Agent. Ratings and BBB grades change often, so check the source before you decide. “Founded” uses the year the firm publishes, or the BBB start year when it doesn’t publish one. “Refund” is the money-back window the firm publishes. “Not published” or “Not stated” means we couldn’t find it on the firm’s website.

North Metro Denver: Broomfield, Westminster and Northglenn
Several of the state’s most-reviewed firms are based in the North Metro area, including 20/20 Tax Resolution, Larson Tax Relief, Reliance Tax Group, Sequoia Tax Relief and BC Tax.
Boulder, Louisville and Longmont
Timberline Tax Group in Louisville is the most highly rated firm we found in Boulder County, with 4.9 stars on both Google and Trustpilot.

Colorado Springs has fewer dedicated tax resolution firms. Most residents work with Denver-area or national firms remotely. The IRS and the Colorado Department of Revenue both have offices in Colorado Springs for in-person questions.
Colorado-Specific Tax Relief Insights
Colorado state taxes are handled by the Colorado Department of Revenue (CDOR), whose collection rules differ from the IRS. CDOR can file state tax liens and levies, and it offers its own installment plans. Colorado and IRS debts need separate agreements, and filing your return on time, even if you can’t pay, prevents extra penalties.
Tax Attorney or Tax Relief Company?
Many people search for a tax attorney when they get an IRS notice. For most collection problems (back taxes, payment plans, liens, levies and wage garnishments), an Enrolled Agent or CPA can represent you before the IRS just like an attorney can. A tax attorney is usually worth it if you face possible criminal exposure, tax court litigation, or complex business or estate issues. Several firms on this list have Enrolled Agents, CPAs and attorneys on the same team.
Free Tax Help in Colorado
If you owe less than $10,000, or only owe state tax, you may not need a paid firm at all:
- Colorado Department of Revenue – Community Tax Help: help and payment options for Colorado state tax debt (which we don’t handle on its own).
- IRS payment plans: many people can set up an installment agreement online in minutes.
- Taxpayer Advocate Service: free, independent help inside the IRS when a problem isn’t getting solved.
- Low Income Taxpayer Clinics: free or low-cost representation if you qualify.

Frequently Asked Questions
Check four things before you sign: who will work your case (an Enrolled Agent, CPA or tax attorney who can represent you before the IRS), whether you get a written fee quote upfront, the refund policy, and recent reviews on Google, Trustpilot and BBB. Be careful with any company that promises a specific settlement before it has reviewed your IRS transcripts.
Most IRS representation happens by phone, mail and the IRS e-Services system, and a power of attorney (Form 2848) works in every state. A local firm helps if you want to meet in person; a remote firm can work just as well for most collection cases.
The Colorado Department of Revenue offers payment plans for state tax debt. You can request one through its Revenue Online portal or by contacting the Department. See Community Tax Help for free assistance.
Yes. Like the IRS, the Colorado Department of Revenue can file state tax liens and levy wages or bank accounts for unpaid state tax. State and IRS debts are handled separately, so an IRS payment plan does not stop Colorado collection.
Only alongside an IRS case. If you owe only Colorado state tax, contact the Colorado Department of Revenue directly or a local firm that handles state tax, which is usually the faster and cheaper route.
Most firms don’t publish prices. One Denver firm on our list publishes a typical range of $2,500 to $7,500+ for full representation, and complex cases can cost more. Ask for a written quote and a clear refund policy. For balances under $10,000, an IRS payment plan you set up yourself is often the cheapest option.
Yes. You can set up many IRS payment plans online for free, the Taxpayer Advocate Service helps when an IRS problem isn’t getting solved, and Low Income Taxpayer Clinics offer free or low-cost representation if you qualify.
Colorado does not impose a state-level estate tax. The state’s estate tax was effectively eliminated after December 31, 2004, following changes in federal law that phased out the state death tax credit. However, residents are still subject to the federal estate tax, which applies to estates exceeding the federal exemption threshold.
Colorado imposes property taxes, which are administered at the county level. The state has some of the lowest residential property taxes in the country. However, property tax rates can vary by county due to differences in local mill levies and assessment rates. Property tax is paid through your county treasurer’s office, online, by mail or in person.
The IRS generally has 10 years from the date a tax is assessed to collect it. That deadline is your Collection Statute Expiration Date, and your IRS account transcript shows it. The Colorado Department of Revenue collects state tax debt under its own state-law timeline, so do not assume a Colorado balance expires when a federal one does. Check each balance separately. Calculate your CSED.
A wage levy means a tax agency has started taking part of your pay directly from your employer because a balance is unpaid and no payment arrangement is in place. Check the paperwork your employer received: an IRS wage levy arrives on Form 668-W, while a state wage garnishment comes from the Colorado Department of Revenue on its own notice. Each one has to be released separately, so stopping an IRS levy does not stop a Colorado one.
Treat them as two separate cases. File every return on time even if you cannot pay, because the failure-to-file penalty runs ten times higher than the failure-to-pay penalty. With the IRS you can request an installment agreement, an Offer in Compromise, or currently not collectible status. The Colorado Department of Revenue runs its own payment plans through its Revenue Online portal, and an IRS agreement does not cover a Colorado balance.
No. Fresh Start is a set of IRS changes, covering easier installment agreements, a higher lien filing threshold and more flexible Offer in Compromise terms, and it applies only to federal tax debt. Colorado state tax debt is handled separately by the Colorado Department of Revenue under its own rules, so a federal Fresh Start agreement leaves a Colorado balance untouched.
Do the federal years first. Request your IRS wage and income transcripts to rebuild the years you are missing, file each year on that year’s own form, and send them in. Then file the matching Colorado returns, because a Colorado return starts from your federal taxable income and cannot be completed until the federal year is filed. More on clearing back taxes.
No. Colorado levies a flat state income tax and continues to do so. The rate has been trimmed in some years under the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights when the state collects a surplus, so check the Colorado Department of Revenue for the rate that applies to the year you are filing.
Colorado has a relatively low state income tax and property tax. Combined state and local sales taxes can be high in certain counties, though, because of additional local levies.
How We Chose These Companies
- We searched Google Maps for tax relief and tax resolution firms in Colorado’s largest cities and kept firms that focus on resolving IRS and state tax debt, not general tax preparation.
- Each firm needed a Google rating of 4.0 or higher with at least 30 reviews. We then checked its BBB profile, Trustpilot page and website.
- We compared founding year, ratings, BBB grade and accreditation, team credentials, pricing transparency and refund policy. Where a firm publishes a minimum debt amount, we note it in that firm’s section rather than the comparison table.
- No firm on this list, including us, publishes an independently audited success rate, so we don’t rank by success rate.
- We excluded listings we couldn’t verify, such as businesses with very few reviews spread across many cities.
